It’s been a few years since Midlothian business owner Don Killelea has been a public official.
But a village budget crunch and a little arm twisting from new Mayor Terry Stephens convinced the one-time Midlothian School District 143 board member to take a seat on the village board.

Midlothian is giving a break to motorists who have accumulated fines and penalties for parking tickets in the village.
Starting May 1, the village will begin an amnesty program in which vehicle owners can pay a fraction of what they owe. Trustees approved the program, which applies only to parking tickets and expires Oct. 31, at Wednesday’s village board meeting.

Midlothian officials are hoping for some good news from federal authorities as they stamped the envelopes and mailed out their economic stimulus applications last week.
The village submitted three public works projects for the federal government to consider funding, with a total cost of about $2.5 million. Officials realize they probably will not have all three funded completely. But any amount will help to the cash-strapped community, they said.

The Midlothian Park District isn’t going to get a huge expansion to the Don Preston Recreation Center at 14500 S. Kostner Ave. anytime soon.
But park district officials believe it will happen eventually.

Midlothian Police Chief Vince Schavone said when he first became chief in 2003, one of the goals communicated to him was to have the department become a part of a joint dispatch center somewhere.
After almost six years of working toward that goal, it was realized last month. Midlothian’s dispatch now is being handled through Blue Island’s dispatch center.

Midlothian residents will have their first new mayor in 24 years and a new property tax increase to fill an approximate $2 million budget hole.
In a surprising outcome, longtime mayor Thomas Murawski was trounced by Trustee Terry Stephens, a former ally of Murawski, by a vote of 2,636 votes to 703, with all 13 precincts counted.

Midlothian Park District officials know these probably aren’t the best times to ask taxpayers for a property tax increase.
But they also know they’re responding to residents, who asked for improved recreational facilities in two separate surveys.
In an April 7 referendum, the park district will ask voters to approve an $8.5 million bond issue to quadruple the size of the recreation center at 145th Street and Kostner Avenue – increasing it to 40,000 square feet.
A resident whose house has a market value of $150,000 would pay about $110 more per year in property taxes to pay off the bonds, district officials said.

Thomas Murawski has been affixed atop the Midlothian Village Board dais for 24 years as mayor.
After running unopposed in 2005, Murawski could face one of his toughest opponents in former ally Terry Stephens as he seeks re-election April 7.
The election may prove to be one of the more interesting elections in the Southland.

At Sgt. Christopher Abeyta’s funeral, it was his own words that reduced mothers, fathers, sons and daughters to tears.
“Mom, I know you do not enjoy the path that I have chosen for myself, but trust me, it is so very rewarding,” 23-year-old Abeyta wrote in a letter only four months ago.

More than 1,600 people, many waving American flags, lined Pulaski Road near 152nd Street in Midlothian this afternoon for the funeral procession of a National Guardsman killed by a road bomb in Afghanistan last week.
The procession passed Bremen High School where Sgt. Christopher Abeyta, 23, graduated in 2003. About 1,450 Bremen students, nearly the entire school, and 100 teachers and school staff lined Pulaski.
